Welcome to 8th Grade Music. The music curriculum for 8th grade is entitled “The History of Popular Music”. We will focus our time throughout the year discussing, researching, and debating the definition of popular music. We will study what has made music popular throughout American History, and determine what qualities make up some of the most successful music in history. Much like our 7th grade curriculum, our work will be focused intense class discussion, take home assignments, and group work, and projects. It may seem easier than studying for tests and quizzes, however the responsibility for your success falls on your shoulders more than ever before.
Throughout the year we will navigate through different time periods in popular music history. Many of our units will align with subjects being discussed in Media Studies and History classes. Instead of following a linear timeline from early pop music through current, we will navigate around the last century or so by jumping from time period to time period. Much like Bill and Ted on their Excellent Adventure. (In case you aren’t familiar they were the FIRST guys to time travel using a phone booth. They were also much more rad.)
Here are some of the things we’ll be focusing on this year:
What is Popular Music?
Pop Music and Advertising
Civil War Music
Jazz/Swing and Prohibition
The Birth of Rock and the Electric Guitar
Motown History
Music of the Counterculture
World Popular Music
Hip-Hop History
The goal of each major unit will be to incorporate intense class discussion and debate, and end with a culminating project or presentation. Please note the important information on the Expectations and Procedures page. .
